School Wardens are appointed in Dorchester.

1645

Sometimes called the “first school committee in the U.S.,” They are Humphrey Atherton, Deacon Wiswal, and a Mr. Howard. The wardens are elected for life, although the town reserves the right to remove any of them for “weighty reasons.” The wardens continue to be responsible for the schools until Dorchester is annexed to Boston in 1870.*
